Education

I have a BA in English from Ouachita Baptist University and am completing my Masters in Multi-Media Journalism from Arkansas Tech University.

Experience

My first experience as a teacher was a year-long, on-campus class at Glenhaven Youth Ranch, a residential facility for teenagers at risk of dropping out of high school or being placed into the juvenile penal system. There, I taught a high-school level Compositional Writing course to several teenagers whose English skills were generally at the middle-school level or lower. Among other things, we covered creative writing, letters of persuasion, and illustrative essays where they needed to provide descriptive details and instructions for the individual steps of processes such as cooking a pie. My twelfth graders all succeeded in graduating that year. Currently, I am working as a tutor for an SES provider, helping high-school students with whatever subjects or assignments they are struggling with. This is usually Math, but occasionally also Chemistry and reading assignments for History. My desire is to assist students, not only in learning the material, but in improving their skills at learning and problem-solving. I hope to help them achieve a sense of accomplishment as well as understanding, to spark a new attitude towards learning and an improved confidence in their own intellectual abilities. I'm also willing to work at whatever pace the student needs to get that far, so long as the student is at least half-willing to keep trying.

Hobbies

I enjoy works of fiction, particularly science-fiction and fantasy; I have amassed a small library of novels, many books of which I have read more than once. My favorites include the works of Michael A. Stackpole, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, and C.S. Lewis. I have also collected C.S. Lewis' various collected essays. I likewise enjoy movies of the family, comedy, and action genres. I do not, however, generally care for horror. My tastes in video-games runs towards titles with significant stories, and far away from First-Person Shooters. If games feature interesting stories but require skills I don't possess, I watch friends play them and provide strategic or puzzle-solving aid as needed. I like music of any genre or style, regardless of artist or band, provided that the music is good, the lyrics are unobjectionable, and any screaming or growling by the singer is not overdone. Classical instruments are wonderful, both Western and foreign. I like energetic beats and tempos best of all. I do collect comics, but primarily translated imports from Japan and Korea. I like how foreign titles generally come to a timely end, which means that they are written from beginning to end by the same writer under the same management. The fewer changes in policy or artistic vision, the more consistent a story can remain.
